Further to the back injury suffered in March, Melissa discovered that the extent of the injury was worse than originally thought. She has now undergone successful surgery to repair the damage done. This now leads to a prolonged recover perod, and we will bring news of any new projects once we have them, but for now, Melissa is taking time to rest and recover.

Melissa Gilbert will be taking a brief leave from her role as "Ma" in the national tour of Little House on the Prairie, the Musical, to undergo a minor surgical procedure for a back injury that she sustained early in the tour. She will be undergoing a bi-lateral Rhizotomy at DISC in Los Angeles and her recovery is expected to be complete. Melissa will miss the performances in Spokane, Washington but is expected to be back in the show in Sacramento, California. "I am so blessed that modern technology will allow me to deal with this injury and get right back to the show and to the devoted fans. I will miss my Prairie family (P-Dawgs rule!!) but am looking forward to returning, feeling better and stronger than ever" Melissa said.

Hi everyone!
I hear that many are hearing reports of my back injury and are worried. Long story short, I've blown a couple of discs in my low back. I've got some nerve compression and was in quite a lot of pain. In fact, after last friday's show I had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. I stayed there for two days and underwent a nerve block procedure in my spine. I am much much better and back in the show...maybe not quite as bouncy as before but definitely back and after some rehab and PT I expect to be bouncing about again.

Melissa is deeply saddened to hear the news about the death of Patrick Swayze. On her personal twitter page she said the following:
'oh Buddy...no more pain for you. My prayers are with your beautiful Lisa and your family...Say hi to my Dad and my Pa'

Musical rehearsals have begun. Also - Actress Melissa Gilbert recently joined Habitat for Humanity New York City to build a co-op apartment in the South Bronx.
Gilbert, who played Laura Ingalls in the T.V. version of “Little House on the Prairie”, will star as Ma Ingalls in a live musical adaptation of Little House, which begins a 34-week, 25-city tour in October.
Gilbert’s work in the Bronx is part of a deal made by the cast and crew to help local Habitat for Humanity affiliates build homes on each stop of the tour. The show will also donate $1,500 to each local Habitat chapter along the way.
Habitat for Humanity chief Jonathan Reckford said the struggles of the fictional Ingalls family in difficult conditions parallel challenges many families face today.
